Find a Team

Whether you are a student looking to race or an adult looking to start a team, the New York League wants to do everything we can to help you.

New York NICA teams give a place for everyone, engaging entire families through an intentionally inclusive environment. By implementing youth development principles that focus on play and physical literacy, we can create a new paradigm shift for young student-athletes that prioritizes a desire to participate in healthy outdoor behaviors, builds confidence within themselves and develops strong, positive relationships among their peers. This approach creates a team culture that encourages entire families to support one another by staying active for life.

Don’t see a team in your area?

No worries! If there isn’t a team near you yet, you can help bring mountain biking to your community by starting one. Many of our teams begin with just a few interested riders and supportive adults who want to create opportunities for students to ride and be part of a team.

Team Information

Teams in the New York League are typically organized in one of two ways depending on the needs of the local community. Whether a team is connected to a specific school or represents a broader geographic area, each model is designed to make mountain biking accessible and sustainable for student-athletes while supporting long-term program growth.

School-based teams are the most effective way to engage new riders and establish a lasting program. School-based teams are comprised of students from a single public or private elementary, middle and/or high school. By allowing students to participate within their own school community—including those who are homeschooled but zoned for the school—these teams significantly streamline recruitment efforts and build stronger local connections. School-based teams help more students discover mountain biking as a viable and available athletic option.

Composite teams can include all elementary, middle and high school riders within a specific geographic area to include public, private and homeschool students that do not have a school-based team available to them. Composite teams are intended to support the development of school-based teams. Starting a composite team is an excellent way to encourage the formation of future school-based programs. Notably, many composite teams continue to support school-based teams in their development by sharing resources, coaches, and establishing a positive community.

Please note that composite teams are subject to team rider limits, including scoring splits as outlined in the NY NICA Handbook in order to encourage school-based team formation. Review NY Handbook

TEAM SCORING & DIVISIONS

There are Division I and Division II teams within NICA Leagues. Division I and Division II teams score separately within Leagues but are treated equally in all other aspects. The separation is intended to provide a fair competitive environment. Teams are awarded points after every League event which count toward team standings for the overall series. Points from both girls and boys contribute to a team’s overall score, though a team does not need both to score for a race.

For more information regarding team types, scoring & divisions, please refer to the New York NICA Handbook.

TEAM REGISTRATION

All participating teams are required to register with the New York League at the start of each season. This registration provides essential insurance coverage for coaches and volunteers while supporting overall League programs.

For questions regarding the NICA Pit Zone team registration process, please contact our League Director to get started.

Don’t have a team to race with?

That’s okay! Students can compete as an independent racer in the League Series. While they will not be eligible for the Team Overall title, they are eligible for the Indiviual Race and Overall titles. Independent racers need not register a team, and should only register for the series, being sure to denote that they are racing as an “Independent” where appropriate on registration forms. All other rules apply.
