Equality is not synonymous with equity. Equality is treating everyone the same. Equity is giving everyone the respective tools needed to be equally successful.
GRiT NY strives to continue NICA’s core values of friendship, joy and adventure. Our goal is to create a program that is not only fun but creates experiences for girls to embark on adventures on and off the trails! We value inclusivity and truly believe if you want to bike, no matter the skill level or experience, EVERY GIRL is welcome and supported! We believe that biking and GRiT is an invitation that unites anyone who just likes to bike and where friendship, joy and adventure can start and flourish!
We want to increase girls’ awareness of NICA programs by offering girls-only social and riding opportunities for girls, moms, friends, siblings and female coaches. Day rides, GRiTty local businesses partnerships, GRiT Camps, and GRiT student-athlete Ambassador programs are just a few ways we are getting the word out about #GirlsRidingTogether.

GRiTTy Committee North
Michelle: I feel alive on my bike!
Why I love GRiT: I love seeing my daughter feeling strong and empowered.
I love to see her make friends with other girls who favor non-traditional
sports. I love being a part of something
encourages girls to be bold, take risks, and succeed.
“To thine own self be true.”
– William Shakespeare
Jackie: I started mountain biking to spend time with and impress my new boyfriend… now we have been married for 25 years and still love to bike together!
Why I love
GRiT: Due to my love of mountain biking, my kids were raised on it.
My daughter didn’t have any other girls to ride with so she was discouraged.
Now she sees how really cool mountain biking is when she realized there’s
other girls her age, and their moms, that love to bike too!
“Two roads diverged in a yellow wood… and I, I took the one less traveled by,
and that has made all the difference.”
– Robert Frost
GriTTy Committee South:
Clare: I love to bike because I love being outdoors and I love the challenge of physically and mentally overcoming obstacles.
Why I love GRiT: I love the people and the group
rides gave my daughter the courage to race and
be a part of a mountain biking team.
“this summer I went swimming,
this summer I might have drowned,
but I held my breath and I kicked my feet,
and I moved my arms around, moved my arms around.”
– Loudon Wainwright lll
Jeannette: I like to bike for the sheer joy it brings me! Mountain biking feels like freedom!
Why I love GRiT: GRiT’s mission to get more girls on bikes is so important to the development of young female riders. Mt. biking is challenging and exhilarating. It helps develop skills of resilience and perseverance…it makes you feel strong and confident…it enables you to see amazing places and meet wonderful people with shared interests. All girls should experience the benefits of hard work and supportive mentors and role models.
“Never Doubt That a Small Group of Thoughtful, Committed Citizens Can Change the World; Indeed, It’s the Only Thing That Ever Has.”

Our 2020 GRiT Ambassadors
Middle School Ambassador
Hi! I’m Addie! I am a 6th grader at Van Antwerp Middle School in Niskayuna. I started riding my bike when I was three but have grown up with the sport since I was born. My parents are big into riding. When I first started riding my mom was working at a local bike shop, and my dad was a math teacher (as he still is today). My uncle was also a pro mountain bike rider. We would go around town on our “daily” loop a few times a week. My first bike was a cute, girly, pink Specialized.
Mountain Biking is an escape for me. I love getting out into nature and smelling the air, hearing the leaves crunch under my tires, leaving tracks in the mud, and hearing the wind past right by me. I am so thankful for my family who has continued to support me throughout racing this year, and for years to come. I am also very thankful for the other kids on my team, and all the girls I got to meet at GRIT camp, who inspire me.
This year will be my first year racing NICA, and I am so excited! I attended the first GRIT camp in September, learned new things from it, became a stronger rider, made new friends, and most definitely became more confident about the racing season. Thanks so much, GRIT!!
High School Ambassador
Alana McGinness is a senior at Bronxville High School and has been a part of their mountain biking team and NICA NY since her freshman year. This year will sadly be her last year with NICA NY but she plans on continuing to ride next year when she attends Colorado College. She is absolutely stoked to be a GRiT Ambassador and looks forward to seeing how GRiT will continue to grow! She also looks forward to getting #moregirlsonbikes!

GRiT NY First Ambassador (2019 season)
Gabriella Vides-Barry, a NICA NY alumni, was fierce on the racing trails but more importantly embodied sportsmanship, leadership and humility. She inspired the younger bikers on her team as well as the league. Through NICA she solidified her passion for biking, for competition and for being a positive role model. She is currently a collegiate racer at Lee’s-McRae College in North Carolina, CIT for NICA NY and is still active in GRiT NY.
