NICA NY is here to help you get started by forming a team or registering you as an independent rider to participate in the fun sport of mountain biking.
Whether you are a student looking to race or an adult looking to start a team, the New York League wants to do everything we can to help you. We offer riding and racing to middle or high school students from 6-12.
If you’d like to see a team form at your school, please send me an e-mail to Jason Cairo the New York League Director.

Team Scoring
Teams are awarded points after every League race which count toward the teams’ standings at that individual race and for the overall series. Both girls and boys points count toward that team’s overall score. However, teams need not have boys’ and girls’points to score for a race. Due to the difference in team size between divisions, Division I teams and Division II teams are scored differently.
For Division I, the team’s score is highest score possible out of the following boy/girl combinations:
BBBBBBGG
BBBBBGGG
BBBBGGGG
BBBGGGGG
BBGGGGGG
For Division II, the team’s score is the highers score possible out of the following boy/girl combinatins:
BBBG
BBGG
BGGG
For more information about Team and Individual Scoring, please refer to the NICA Handbook (PDF) (Section 8: “Team and Invidivual Scoring Rules”; pp. 20-21).
For more information about the League rules governing teams, please refer to the NICA Handbook (PDF) (Section 7: “Team Rules”; pp. 17-19)
Individuals, Home School Teams and Composite Teams
Don’t have a team to race with? That’s ok! Students can compete as an independent racer in the League Series. While they will not be eligible for the Team Overall title, they are eligible for the Indiviual Race and Overall titles. Independent racers need not register a team, and should only register for the series, being sure to denote that they are racing as an “Independent” where appropriate on registration forms. All other rules apply.
Composite Teams may form that are comprised of full-time students from more than one high-school within the same district or other geographic proximity. Composite teams must first seek approval of their geographic scope. Contact your league director to discuss a composite team in your region.
Home-school riders are not allowed to join school-based teams, but they may join a composite team, form a regional home-school team or simply race as an independent rider. Home-school teams a much like composite teams but are comprised of home-school studens from a given geographic region.
Composite Team Limitations: Because Composite Teams are intended to be temporary solutions towards building Single School-Based Teams or County-Based Home-School Teams, riders may only score for Composite Teams for a maximum of 2 years. In addition, if a Composite Team has 5 or more students from the same school, those 5 or more students will be scored separately from the rest of that Composite Team unless a petition to do otherwise is approved. See the NICA Handbook (PDF) for more details.
